EDIT: The Chikara Special was nice enough to point out that this match indeed exists! The EVOLVE 14 DVD (http://www.dgusa.tv/store/evolve-14) includes my Peterson Cup tango with Jon Moxley in all it’s glory. Aside from that show being quite an awesome card, I’d encourage you picking this up for that bonus as well. It’s a relief to know one of my favorite and finest works has an outlet after 3 years. Bradley. Christine Coons told me about this amazing guy at Wrestlecon. Of all the wrestlers there, I was the one he wanted to meet the most. It was a complete honor.

I also was amazed to find out he had an amputated leg. But you’d never know it from the energy and good humor he had all night. I dig this kid. I dig his energy. I’m glad you shared it with me Bradley. Thanks for making me YOUR #1 when there were plenty of other choices.

I’d like to say before I begin:

I am not drunk, suicidal, or having a life crisis.

I might if Taylor Swift makes another one of those sappy, man-hating breakup songs, but I digress….

I’m on the eve (unless some huge change occurs) of having to send a tweet on April 11th congratulating Shanna (@Shanna_WP) on her victory for the TNA Gut Check Challenge in Bracket 2. It’s well-deserved and she may be one of the most solid female entrants in the entire running not named Lufisto. Hope she makes the most of the run and support; you should be excited for what’s to come.

But I feel the need to be human for a moment. And I’m going to say some things that admittedly sound selfish. So I’m counting on you to read this whole blog before putting on your powdered wig and banging the gavel.

That human moment is pointing out the fact that it ain’t the bumps, miles, or general abuse your body takes for this business. It’s the mental stuff.

Trust me.

I can’t tell you how many no’s, almost’s, not quite’s, wrong time’s, not now’s, not ever’s, not you’s, not enough’s, etc I’ve received in my career. Warranted and unwarranted. That’s IF they bother to reply and acknowledge you reaching out. Chalk this up to the list. Forming words and feelings to say, “I’m happy for you.”

Haven’t we all been there? Being the good sport when we all know 2nd place gets no trophy?

That feeling makes me flash back to the Zero-1 Fighting Spirit Challenge I took part of in Florida. it was one of the most grueling training sessions I’d ever been apart of. It challenged me in all aspects of my game and also gave birth to the 52 card workout technique I use in my workouts.

I worked so hard I cramped up more than once and reached limits I never knew. It scared me. Aaron Epic still laughs about me having to lay in an ice bath for over an hour in his apartment just to get right for my match later that evening.

I failed.

SMASH World Tryout.

Failed.

TNA Gut Check.

Not quite.

Even now, I have a tingle of unworthiness that follows coming up short.

I am too aware of that feeling knowing that what you THOUGHT was your grand effort, just ain’t it. Which leads me to something. I was asked by someone very dear to me about what it is that has earned me the connection I have with so many of you. I’ve thought about it and I wanna believe it’s centered around a huge reason.

I’ve never pretended I don’t know what you feel like. I have a lot of contemporaries in this business. I’m sad to say, some that put on a better act out of the ring than in. Some with gifts I’ll never have and doors I’ll never see the other side of. It’s like somewhere along the way; they forgot what it was like to fail. To feel unworthy. To claw with your fingernails for a goal and come up that one inch short from winning.

Well I got news for ya. For as positive as I am and for any success you believe I have: I fail ALL the time. I bolded it, so you know I’m serious.

Even after I write this, I will come up short, know disappointment, and suck up a loss to congratulate another. That’s life.

Life is also knowing that sunny days wouldn’t be sunny if not for rain.

Being accepted to CHIKARA was a “yes” that was among the most satisfying ever in my life. If only you knew the mountain of failures I had to climb to reach that. Yet it’s been worth every last one of them.

So I write this as a commentary to anyone with a dream.

You are going to fail. Some failures on a grander scale than others. Your mental toughness will decide if you submit to the ultimate failure or not: giving up completely or pressing through.

The fact that you’re failing means you’re TRYING. Work harder, Run faster. Shout louder. FIGHT FOR IT. And when it’s your time; your effort that was enough to win the day: enjoy everything that comes with it. That feeling will be so sweet knowing your effort knew validation in that moment. You used falling short as fuel to overachieve and work harder so that next time, the no would be a yes.

I hope you as fans and even other workers see that in my style. I can’t hide 2 things in my work as Sugar Dunkerton. Obviously one is the fact that I’m goofy, silly, and mischievous. It’s who I am.

The other is I’m a scrapper. Maybe not even the best you’ve seen at it. But for that moment; you’re getting everything I know how to give you. Predetermined outcome or not; that’s what makes it real.

The clock is going to countdown tomorrow. I encourage you to vote on challenge.tnagutcheck.com for what times remains. For those who have already, thanks. For those who will, thanks. For those who chose someone else, thanks. For those who didn’t want it for me, thanks.

No matter what, it means I was on your mind long enough to make a decision that would somehow effect me, negative or positive. It’s the indifference that really stings me. In all probability, I’m going to lose. I’ve got my tweet ready for the lovely Shanna when that day comes and she’s got my support as the Gut Check Challenge presses forward. They all do.

As for me; I get low for that slight second….then my heart beats just a little harder. A little faster. It knows as well as I do I’ve still got a chase.

I don’t know who’s going to give me the opportunity for the “next step”, be it the “yes” I speak of or opening the door I so badly want to walk through, but I certainly won’t let a little thing like failing keep me from seeing that day. It’s gonna happen one way or another.

So I ask you now that I’ve bared a piece of my mind’s eye for you….

What have you failed at and how many are you willing to muster?

It only takes that one time to be great forever after all. Don’t miss it. Cause after all, Gut Check is beyond a segment on IMPACT WRESTLING!

It’s life. From the first breath til the last. ;)
